Creating Jewelry with CAD
Custom designed jewelry came into vogue as back as the 17th century. Some of the techniques are still in use even today. However, since the introduction of the computer aided design (CAD), custom designed jewelry reached a new standard. Along with amazing designs, this technology also enables customers with more design choices and thus better quality products.
The process of designed custom designed jewelry is called lost wax casting. The process involves creating a cut out of the jewelry from the wax by the experts following which the replica is poured into a flask and filled with plaster (investment). It is then allowed to dry; once the replica hardens, it resembles an identical copy to that of the flask.
Once the burning process is over, the melted metal is inserted in the flask using vacuum casting. Once the metal turns hard and is cooled, the plaster gets broken on its own. This is done to bring out the unfinished jewelry casting, which is filled, cultured and prepared for the final stage. The following procedure involves gemstone setting or setting of other precious/semi-precious stones. A number of jewelers follow this process in order to make a custom designed jewelry.
However, in the CAD process, most of the above-mentioned processes are avoided. The customers are given the freedom to create mock designs prior to the actual creation of the design itself. The software is able to produce thousands of designs and the measurements are so accurate that one does not stand the chance of losing a stone on account of the metal’s weakness.
Custom Aided Design has not made jewelry designing simpler but also enhanced its quality. The greatest benefit of custom handcrafted jewelry is that customers can manipulate the designs as per their choice. Custom designed jewelry is thus unique and will surely make heads turn.

Whats a Jelly Belly?
When you are looking to buy vintage costume jewellery you will notice the term ‘jelly belly’ used to describe anything from coloured cabouchons to moonstones, hopefully by the end of this you will be a bit wiser. A jelly belly is a clear lucite (thermoplastic acrylic resin) shape often set in sterling silver or metal. The first ‘jelly bellys’ were produced from 1938-39, but the maximum production was from 1943-45. Sterling was rationed and very expensive,so adding a piece of lucite to the design made producing large eyecatching designs a reality. Many costume jewellery manufacturers used the jelly bellys, but most famous are the Trifari and Corocraft sterling designs, which incorporated fantastic design with breathtaking quality of materials and craftsmanship.
